The Favorite Chair
I happened upon a vintage green leather chair and ottoman eons ago. At first glance, I knew it was for me. And, over time I began to think of it as my favorite chair. Lots of us have favorite shoes, favorite scarves, favorite this and favorite that. But, a favorite chair? I’ll tell you it’s definitely something to consider.
When I think of my grandmothers, I picture them doing things they love (baking, playing Scrabble) or the other main image I have of them is in their favorite chair. Yes, they both had them, well loved, but very different chairs. And, I have mine.
It didn’t start out that way. I have lots of chairs and many quite nice ones. The favorite green chair has made the rounds and been in a few design vignettes over the years. It also has fans. Yes, friends ask me, “when are you passing that chair along?” They think at some point I will get tired of it and they may get to bring it home. Sorry, my friends — it’s my favorite!
As the years go by, green chair is more important to me than ever. It’s become a known thing when I mention I’m going to go sit in “my chair.” If someone else sits there it’s a little weird for a moment. That chair is my spot. It’s not a task-focused chair. It’s not the best spot for reading. It’s a chair to just “be” in. As I sit there, somehow I come back to myself, feeling grounded, resting intentionally and able to process the day and envision future plans.
Is the chair magic? Maybe. Or, is it like the Little Prince and his rose when he says, “It is the time you have wasted for your rose that makes your rose so important.” Somehow, even though I’ve adored the chair from day one, the time I’ve spent just being in my favorite chair has made it important, like the rose.
If you have a favorite chair, good for you! I believe we all should. And, if not, it may be time to start thinking about what that favorite chair would be. For a home with soul and sophistication, a favorite chair is your spot to intentionally just “be.” It’s there just for you to enrich and inspire life on the daily. Yep, just a chair — a favorite chair.
My favorite green chair.
