Your Home Canvas

Your home is a canvas for your life, so it's no wonder this time of year brings up so many conversations about dreams for your personal canvas in the year ahead. Imagining the possibilities can be overwhelming -- after all, your home is a complex maze of space, art, design, form, flow, functional elements and a dynamic mix of day to day people, pets and activities.

It's tough to "stop the train" and gaze into the future envisioning your dreams. To zoom out and see what's possible to improve and inspire your day to day living. Exploring the possibilities should be inspiring and absolutely worth it to guide your dream home forward! To help with the process of envisioning what's possible, I like to start with these three key areas of focus and consideration:

1) What do you love about your existing home? Nothing? That's okay -- I get that a lot. But, there are likely some items that are sentimental or conjure up amazing memories, such as art or artifacts from vacations or family heirlooms. Or, a color you just can't get enough of. Even an item you haven't figured out how to integrate into your current home, but love the potential as it is. Think about what you want to carry forward -- that continuity is important and will bring some personal texture and soul to your space.

2) What are some of the activity and functional spaces you are missing? Do you have a favorite reading spot? Is your aim to do yoga or meditate every day? Do you have an exciting new hobby that needs its own space? Do you just need a place to chill? Or, is there an area of the home that you no longer need to take up space and can reinvent? Think about what you want to fill your time with. And, what type of form, flow and function that will require.

3) Where have you felt most comfortable, happy and inspired in the last year? Is there a hotel, restaurant or other space that just lights you up? An object or art piece that speaks to you and inspires you? Is there an area of your home (or a friend or relative's) that you just love? Or, at least some elements that set off a spark to work from. Try to describe the vibe (plus, photo sharing helps, too!). Define and share what about that space (or, spaces) makes you feel that way. This will help bring it to life for your future home design.

Thinking about these things should be fun and will give you a running start at creating your dream home and bringing new energy, soul and sophistication into your life. It can mean the difference between a cookie cutter design and a truly personal home that makes you feel you are living life to the fullest. I'd love to learn more about what you're dreaming of for the future. Let's make it a reality in 2026!

A favorite spot for reading.
